Wide view of Beverly Gardens Park with the Beverly Hills monument sign

Best time

When the sun is on the sign.

When the sun lights the face of the Beverly Hills Sign, day by day, plus the City event days at the park: the Lily Pond light show, the Menorah lighting and the Art Show.

The sign faces south-southeast, across the Lily Pond toward Santa Monica Boulevard (about 160°, somewhere between 140° and 185°). Pick a date to see each part of the day: front light, side light, sun behind the sign, twilight and night.

What the geometry says

  • Late September to mid March: the face is in sun from shortly after sunrise to about 3 pm, and the first hour after sunrise puts low golden light on it.
  • April to August: the sun rises and sets well to the north, so the face is in sun only from about 9 or 10 am to 2 pm. Early mornings and evenings light it from the side or from behind.
  • After about 3 pm the sun sits at the edge of the face or behind it all year, so sunset light does not fall squarely on the lettering.

Limits

  • Geometry only. Clouds, haze and the park's large trees are not modelled, and trees can shade the face.
  • The facing comes from OpenStreetMap (the boulevard runs 231° and 51° here) and two geotagged photos of the face. Minutes where the answer depends on the exact angle are shown as edge light.
  • No crowd counts are published for the park, so this page does not estimate crowds. The event days below are when the City is drawing people in.

Crowds

Event days come from City pages. Quiet times are not measured anywhere we could find, so we do not claim any.
